This is a picture of the fungus in it's alive state. Last time I took the pictures they were like the black pieces seen. (I thought it might have been poo.)
I've never seen a fungus like that before I thought it was a bunch of wild mice burrowing into the ground at first there's also a small but interesting type of succulent plant that looks a lot like these
I didn't know it was a fungus either but it was too weird not to be. I have a picture in the gallery up here when I took them last fall. They looked like poop at first but it was only localized to the dead tree stump. I ended up contacting someone at the Chicago Field Museum and he told me that it indeed was a fungus. It was the most he'd ever seen in one spot though. This was the link he had sent me for more information.

The coral-like varieties are also very pretty
